Can The Gandhi Philosophy Work Today?
In India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is one of the most popular national heroes and freedom fighters. Every child in India is aware of him and his role in the Independence of India. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is also known as Mahatma Gandhi and Bapu. Examples of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology, principles, and ideals are given to every child all over the world.
In India, buildings, monuments, roads, streets, and other things are named after him to keep reminding India about his role in their freedom. Not only buildings, monuments, roads, streets, and other things are named after him, but also the Indian currency contains his photo.
Therefore, he has not only contributed to India’s Independence but also brought up India as a mature nation and presented India on International platforms.
There is a rich history behind the freedom of India full of struggle, torture, bravery, courage, and sacrifice. And it is mandatory for students of boarding schools in India to know about India’s freedom fighters, who fought for our independence. It is known by most of us that India achieved its Independence on 15th August in 1947, but there is a lot of history before its Independence. In the 17th century, European traders came to India and got overwhelmed by the rich Indian culture. So, they established their outposts in India.
By the 18th century, the British East India Company captured some of the small kingdoms and slowly established themselves as the only dominant force in India. This was possible because of the military strength of the British army. Ultimately, the British had direct control all over India, and they started to rule India. After many years, the sense of freedom started rising among the Indians, and this led to several AntiBritish reforms.
It was during the 19th century when a civil society emerged, called the Indian National Congress Party. Mahatma Gandhi was the part of the congress and formed the party to carry out protests against the British in a peaceful way. The Congress Party told people to take actions against the British government, following civil disobedience, and to carry out their other instructions.
People used to spend this day by taking pledges, joining meetings, by taking steps to eradicate the difference in the society like untouchables, differences between Hindus and Muslims, etc. and by other peaceful methods. The only aim was to achieve complete freedom and make India an independent nation, and this was achieved when the actual Independence took place in the year 1947.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi achieved the degree of law from London and started the very first movement in India after personally experiencing discrimination in foreign countries. He also set international examples of freedom movements as they were peaceful, non-violent, and effective at the same time. Movements started by him in the freedom of India include several movements like Dandi March, Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement, and many others.
Some people believe that Gandhian principles like non-violence, peace, protection of women, and tolerance are the only way to make India better. Gandhian principles are indeed very effective, but, in today’s world, a nation cannot run solely based on these principles. It is because these principles were suitable for the old India and to cope up with today’s world these principles are very tough to follow and need to be modified.
Although there are other heroes and freedom fighters who have sacrificed themselves in the journey of making India free, Gandhi has been given a much more preference all over India. It can be said that more than Gandhi, India needs other freedom fighters like Shubhash Chandra Bose, the trio of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru. It is because the principle of tolerance and non-violence is not practical while on the other hand, the principle like self-defence is much needed and is also practical.
Teachers of girls boarding schools make their students understand the value of independence, nationalism and patriotism. Even these things are taught in the “History” subject by the teachers.
